Angels Parting Ways with Anthony Rendon
The Los Angeles Angels are reportedly moving on from third baseman Anthony Rendon. Initially set to commence the final year of a seven-year, $245 million deal, that last year is now postponed by three to five years.
At 35, Rendon was supposed to earn over $38 million in 2026. However, reports suggest he might find himself on the 60-day injured list due to eligibility issues, meaning he won’t be playing with the team.
Rendon’s contract has been labeled as one of the worst in sports history. He began his career with the Washington Nationals, where he played a crucial role in their 2019 World Series win.
During that memorable season, he boasted a batting average of .319 along with 34 home runs and 126 RBIs—leading the league in that last category. He even grabbed third place in the National League MVP voting after also leading in doubles in both 2018 and 2019.
However, after joining the Angels, Rendon’s performance was disappointing. A series of injuries limited his appearances to just 257 games out of a possible 1,032 in those six seasons. In that time, he managed a batting average of .242 with only 22 home runs and 125 RBIs, which doesn’t even compare to his single-season stats in 2019.
Recently, Rendon underwent hip surgery prior to spring training. This procedure leaves him unable to play in 2025, and it’s been agreed upon between him and the Angels that continuing his playing career isn’t feasible.
