Federal Judge Orders Detention of Man Accused of Threatening Richard Grenell
A federal judge in Alexandria, Virginia, has decided to keep a 33-year-old man in custody. This individual is accused of making threats against Richard Grenell, a key ally of former President Donald Trump and director of the Kennedy Center. Officials from the Justice Department claimed this ruling is a success for the Trump administration and for U.S. Attorney Lindsay Harrigan.
Interestingly, Grenell, who previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany, wasn’t present for the arraignment, and he was referred to only as a “federal employee” in official communications.
The individual charged, Scott Allen Bolger, faces allegations of communicating a threat in interstate commerce and providing false information to a federal officer. Authorities managed to trace the threats back to him using telephone records. His arraignment took place in federal court in Alexandria.
Detaining someone before trial is somewhat atypical, and Justice Department representatives stressed that this is a win for their agency. According to court documents, Bolger reportedly sent threatening messages to Grenell through Google Voice, which allows users to connect with phone numbers unrelated to their main devices.
Additionally, Bolger is accused of misleading federal task force members when they questioned him at his home in McLean, where he identified himself as “Brian Black.”
If found guilty, Bolger could face a prison sentence of up to five years.
They noted that Harrigan, appointed earlier this year by Trump, was also at the arraignment, although she had no formal role in it.
The Justice Department disclosed a victim’s statement from Grenell, which was read in court. He expressed that as a special presidential envoy, he frequently faces attacks and harassment from individuals who don’t know him and react strongly due to their differing political views.
While he acknowledged people’s right to harbor anger, he pointed out a crucial distinction, stating, “Today, we are dealing with a man who goes far beyond sharing his angry opinions.” He emphasized the seriousness of threats and violence, saying they must be addressed promptly.
U.S. Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick, who has recently criticized the Justice Department’s handling of cases, decided to place Bolger in pretrial detention. His arrest illustrates a rising tide of threats and intimidation directed at prominent figures across government branches.
Concerns about increasing political violence have been reflected in public opinion polls, especially following several violent incidents. There’s a growing recognition that these actions need serious attention.
