10. Linda Sun’s Trial Takes a Twisting Turn
Linda Sun’s federal trial revealed how a former Albany aide displayed her influence to officials at the Chinese consulate, earning perks like free ballet tickets and gourmet meals.
She controversially texted about Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul’s submissiveness compared to herself while aspiring to ascend politically after Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s tenure. However, a mistrial was declared by a Brooklyn judge on December 22, as the jury couldn’t arrive at a unanimous decision regarding Sun’s alleged illegal activities as a Chinese agent.
Sun and her spouse, Chris Hu, are set for a retrial in 2026.
9. Crackdown on Drug Trade in Washington Square Park
In October, prosecutors in Manhattan swiftly disclosed two significant indictments targeting the illegal drug trade in the area.
One case saw around 20 alleged dealers arrested, accused of running an around-the-clock drug market at Washington Square Park, linked to several overdoses since 2020 through a joint NYPD and DEA investigation.
Shortly afterward, separate charges were mounted against five men for supposedly leading a ring that sold counterfeit pills, impacting young adults across all five boroughs, amid notable drug-related deaths.
