Trump’s Controversial Comments on Somali Immigrants and Ilhan Omar
In a recent post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump directed strong criticism towards Somali immigrants in Minnesota, specifically targeting Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, whom he called part of a group of “con artists” allegedly defrauding taxpayers.
On Wednesday, Trump expressed his frustration over Somali immigrants, pointing out cases of fraud involving taxpayer money. His post claimed that a significant percentage of fraud cases in Minnesota are linked to those who entered the country illegally from Somalia.
“Up to 90% of Minnesota’s fraud cases are committed by people who entered our country illegally from Somalia. ‘Congressman’ Omar is one of many fraudsters and an ungrateful loser who only complains and never donates,” Trump stated.
He further alleged that Omar married her brother to achieve U.S. citizenship, an accusation she has vocally denied.
“Did she really marry her brother? These vile human beings are a liability to the greatness of our country. Send them back from where they came from, Somalia, possibly the worst and most corrupt country on Earth. Make America Great Again!!!” he added.
After mentioning the Omar claims, Trump expanded his comments to include California, suggesting that fraud issues also plague that state, making it part of a broader national problem.
“If that’s possible, California has even more fraud than Minnesota. Add election fraud and they’re tied for first place. Two corrupt governors, two corrupt states!” he asserted.
These comments followed a recent investigation by independent journalist Nick Shirley, who reported on a widespread fraud scheme involving a Somali-owned business in Minneapolis. According to Shirley, his investigation revealed $110 million in fraudulent activities linked to a local daycare that billed the state for nonexistent services.
Shirley’s findings indicated that Minnesota’s nonprofit organizations misused federal child nutrition funding, allegedly misappropriating around $250 million during the COVID-19 pandemic by creating non-existent meal sites.
This week, another daycare center in Minneapolis claimed it had been burglarized, with the manager reporting the theft of crucial documents. However, local police found no evidence to support the break-in claims.
Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota responded to Trump’s remarks, emphasizing accountability for fraudulent actions while insisting that fraudsters would be pursued legally. Yet, recent court rulings appear to complicate the narrative.
A judge recently overturned a guilty verdict against a Somali man involved in a Medicaid fraud scheme, which has drawn ire from jurors and politicians alike. Similarly, charges were dropped for another Somali immigrant due to technical issues during prosecution.
The situation intensified with revelations about a Somali national linked to multiple rapes, whose felony charges were dismissed in what critics deemed a significant legal failure.
“This is a long game for President Trump,” Walz remarked. “We’ve spent years cracking down on scammers. This serious problem is being politicized to undermine programs that assist Minnesotans.”
As the ongoing controversy unfolds, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer announced plans for hearings investigating alleged fraud issues in Minnesota, asserting the need for accountability regarding taxpayer funds.
“Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison are either drowsy driving or complicit in a massive fraud that has injected taxpayer dollars into Minnesota’s social services programs,” Comer stated.
The upcoming hearings are expected to include testimonies from Minnesota lawmakers who have raised concerns over the persistent fraud allegations in the state.
