Mike Kafka’s Journey as Interim Head Coach
Mike Kafka certainly had coaching aspirations as he progressed in his career, attracting attention from other teams during his head coaching interviews, and eventually assuming the role of offensive coordinator for the Giants under Brian Daboll.
Since taking on the interim head coach position after Daboll’s dismissal on November 10, Kafka has been tight-lipped about his future with the Giants or any aspirations to broaden his coaching experience to draw interest from other teams.
Initially struggling, Kafka lost his first five games before achieving his first victory with a solid 34-10 win over the Raiders in Las Vegas last week.
A victory against the Cowboys this Sunday could significantly enhance his prospects for 2026.
“I believe strongly in my coaching skills and leadership,” Kafka mentioned. “We’re focused on the season right now. There will be time to reflect later, but I’m confident in myself.”
As teams out of playoff contention rest players, Kafka is opting for a different strategy, pushing forward with full intensity.
When confronted about the inclusion of defensive starters Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence, Kafka confirmed they are moving ahead steadily. “We have a plan and everyone is committed until the end,” he affirmed.
As for the possibility of resting starters in the second half, Kafka stated, “No, that’s not in our mindset. We’ll play hard for all 60 minutes or however long it takes.”
It remains uncertain how the Cowboys will manage their starters during the game. First-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated that quarterback Dak Prescott will start, though his playing time may vary depending on the game’s dynamics.
TE Theo Johnson missed the recent game in Las Vegas due to illness and was absent from practice on Wednesday. Cold and flu season seems to be affecting the team, with several players struggling. OLB Abdul Carter also reported feeling unwell, and WR Jarrin Hyatt was sent home due to illness. Additionally, WR Wan Dale Robinson (ribs) and CB Cordale Flott (knee) were held out.
Defensive back Jevon Holland missed the Las Vegas game due to a knee injury. Fortunately, it appears to be a minor issue, but he is also being treated for a concussion and is unlikely to participate in the final game of the season.
In other news, Brian Burns has been honored with the 2025 George Young/Ernie Accorsi Good Guy Award, presented by the Giants Chapter of the Pro Football Writers Association. This award recognizes the player deemed most cooperative with reporters who cover the team.
Burns has consistently engaged with the media after games, discussing both his personal achievements (notably a career-high of 16.5 sacks) and the team’s broader challenges.
Robinson finished second in the voting for the award, with Jermaine Elemunor coming in third.
