ACA is Effective, But We've Enhanced It with an Affordability Fund; ACA Requires Subsidies for Accessible Care

New Mexico’s Plan for Affordable Healthcare

During the MS NOW Report on Wednesday, New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martinez, a Democrat, emphasized that the state has always aimed to enhance the Affordable Care Act through the Affordable Care Fund. He noted that while Obamacare is effective, it requires additional subsidies to help residents in New Mexico and other states manage their healthcare expenses. “We absolutely need to address these escalating premiums,” he stated. “That’s why I support a single-payer system, Medicare for All. It’s essential for ensuring everyone has access to affordable healthcare.”

Martinez explained that New Mexico has long been working to improve the Affordable Care Act for its communities. In 2021, the state established the Affordable Care Fund, which is supported by a surcharge on private insurance premiums. “We have over $100 million in that fund, and in recent years, New Mexico has received state-level grants along with federal assistance,” he mentioned. The state is particularly focused on supporting its immigrant communities. With Congress failing to act and the challenges posed by certain congressional members, he indicated that New Mexico is prepared to cover the total amount of federal funding required this year and next to ensure healthcare access for its residents.

He asserted, “Obamacare is functioning. It has benefited millions over the last decade. It’s essential that Congress expands subsidies to help residents in my state and across the country afford healthcare.”

“I frequently hear how Obamacare has been beneficial, not only for my constituents but for people throughout New Mexico, which I see firsthand in my travels,” he continued. “Now, is it necessary to tackle these rising premiums? Absolutely. That’s why I advocate for a single-payer system, Medicare for All. It’s crucial for achieving affordable healthcare for all. But let’s not overlook that Obamacare is effective.”
