George Clooney and Family’s French Citizenship Sparks Controversy
The swift acquisition of French citizenship by Hollywood star George Clooney and his family, despite admitting to their limited French proficiency, has raised eyebrows. A government minister recently described this development as reflective of a “double standard” often experienced by the elite.
According to reports, Clooney, his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney, a British-Lebanese lawyer, and their twins, Ella and Alexander, were granted citizenship in December, as confirmed by a decree published in the Official Gazette of France.
This decision allows “French-speaking foreign nationals who have made significant contributions to France’s influence and international economic relations” to obtain citizenship at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Official documents indicate that Clooney navigated the citizenship process successfully. A letter from Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrault to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez proposed this expedited citizenship pathway for the Clooneys.
Interestingly, this citizenship was granted just before new immigration rules that will enforce stricter language requirements come into effect on January 1.
Deputy Interior Minister Marie-Pierre Vedrennes acknowledged that many French citizens might feel a sense of double standards in this case. He voiced concerns that some of Clooney’s new French colleagues might perceive them as receiving privileged treatment. “We need to be mindful of the messages we are conveying,” he remarked.
Clooney, who is 64, has candidly stated that his French remains lacking, despite his efforts, including lessons and extensive practice.
Starting this Thursday, new applicants seeking French citizenship will be required to demonstrate sufficient French proficiency to enroll in universities as well as pass a civics knowledge test.
The actor has a residence in the south of France and is fond of the country’s privacy laws, which safeguard his family from media scrutiny. “I admire French culture and language, even if my skills are still lacking after 400 hours of lessons,” he said in English during an interview on RTL Radio in December.
His wife, Amal, holds dual British and Lebanese citizenship, speaks fluent French, and works as a human rights lawyer.
Interestingly, Clooney isn’t the only celebrity seeking a French passport. Director Jim Jarmusch recently announced his own application, expressing a desire for “a place to escape from America.”
