Kirk Herbstreit amazed by Alabama's performance against Indiana

Alabama Struggles in College Football Playoff Quarterfinals

In a surprising turn, one of college football’s stalwarts appeared nearly unrecognizable during the first three quarters of the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Many, including ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, expressed disbelief at what unfolded on the field at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.

As Alabama found itself down 17-0 against the top-ranked Indiana, Herbstreit offered a candid take on the situation. “It’s like Alabama. It’s weird to watch,” he remarked. “They just exist. They’re just there… Nobody’s playing with fire. It’s like they feel defeated. Like there’s nothing we can do.” His observation of the team feeling deflated, almost passive, struck a chord with many fans.

In a pivotal moment shortly after, Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza connected with Elijah Surratt for a 24-yard touchdown, pushing Indiana’s lead to 24-0.

Alabama’s following possession marked a significant switch, as Ty Simpson was replaced by backup quarterback Austin Mack due to a “coaching decision,” according to ESPN. Simpson had taken a hard hit earlier in the game and seemed to struggle with his throws.

His performance was less than stellar—completing 12 of 16 passes but only racking up 67 yards.

Later on, kicker Connor Talty managed to score a 28-yard field goal, marking Alabama’s first points of the game. This occurred as Mack guided the team on a scoring drive late in the third quarter.

The stakes are high, as the winner of this matchup will advance to face Oregon State in the Peach Bowl on January 9th.
