Wrinkles and Alzheimer’s Risk
It seems that wrinkles, particularly crow’s feet, might be more than just a sign of aging; they could indicate an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease as one gets older.
A study conducted in China revealed a surprising correlation: those who appear older than their actual age have a 60 percent higher chance of being diagnosed with dementia over 12 years, even when accounting for health and lifestyle factors.
In a follow-up study included in the same report, it was found that individuals with the most prominent crow’s feet had more than double the risk of measurable cognitive impairment compared to those with the fewest wrinkles.
There’s a notion that old age and wrinkles could signal a risk for dementia, which might stem from what scientists refer to as Common Pathogenic Mechanisms. Essentially, the visible signs of facial aging could reflect a person’s internal biological age and their vulnerability to age-related illnesses, particularly those affecting the brain.
Looking older than your actual age isn’t merely about superficial wrinkles; it could be a more significant indicator of overall biological aging, which may outpace chronological age.
Crow’s feet, as it turns out, could serve as a sensitive biomarker since they indicate cumulative environmental damage. For instance, significant sun exposure leads to oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are linked to the aging of the brain.
Moreover, the presence of crow’s feet might visually represent the skin’s biological resilience. If this thin skin demonstrates advanced aging, it might suggest that the body’s repair mechanisms are faltering, including those relevant to brain health.
The researchers concluded that perceived facial age—whether based on subjective opinion or objective observation—could be used in screening methods to identify individuals at risk of cognitive decline or dementia, particularly for early intervention among older adults.
Two distinct studies were conducted to strengthen their findings. In the first part, part of the UK Biobank Study, they analyzed health data from over 195,000 British participants aged 60 and above over an average of 12 years.
Participants were asked whether people thought they looked younger, older, or about their actual age. After considering various factors, those who appeared older had a 61 percent higher risk of developing dementia compared to those perceived as looking younger.
The relationship between perceived age and dementia risk wasn’t uniform across all demographics, however. The strongest links were seen in groups like those with obesity, individuals who spent more time outdoors in summer, and those with a higher genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s.
This elevated risk applied to various types of dementia, particularly vascular dementia, which showed a 55 percent increased risk, along with unspecified dementia at 74 percent.
While there was a connection to Alzheimer’s as well, it was somewhat less pronounced.
For the second study, researchers worked with around 600 older adults in China, showing their photos to a panel of assessors tasked with estimating each person’s age. They discovered that for every year a person was judged to look older than their actual age, their odds of cognitive impairment increased by 10 percent.
They also measured wrinkles objectively using imaging techniques, focusing specifically on crow’s feet. They found that the number and prominence of these wrinkles had the strongest association with cognitive decline.
Interestingly, the study identified that many other health issues, like cardiovascular problems and diabetes, share common factors with cognitive decline, including inflammation and cellular aging.
Chronic inflammation plays a significant role in dementia pathology, driving neuronal damage and hastening brain aging. The study implies that the visible signs of aging on faces may reflect these deeper systemic inflammatory processes.
