Kim Jong Un and Daughter Celebrate New Year
On New Year’s Day, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a notable appearance alongside his daughter, Ju-ae, at the Geumsusan Palace of the Sun. This mausoleum serves as a significant tribute to the nation’s founding leader.
State media outlets shared images of Ju-ae standing with her parents in the mausoleum’s main hall, prompting analysts to speculate about her potential future role in North Korea’s government.
In recent years, Ju-ae has been increasingly featured in state media, leading experts and South Korean intelligence to suggest she might be groomed as a successor to her father. This tradition of Kim visiting mausoleums during significant occasions highlights the emphasis on the dynastic nature of leadership in the nuclear-armed nation.
Although North Korea has not officially confirmed Ju-ae’s age, she is estimated to be around 12 or 13 years old. Her public debut in 2022 coincided with a trip to Beijing, which was her first public appearance outside the country. Analysts viewed this move as a possible indication of her future role in leadership.
Interestingly, the existence of Ju-ae was inadvertently disclosed by former NBA star Dennis Rodman in an interview more than a decade ago.
Interestingly enough, during a visit to North Korea in 2013, Rodman had mentioned that he “held baby Ju-ae,” portraying Kim Jong Un as a caring father.
Parenting expert Kirsty Ketley expressed concerns about the implications of thrusting Ju-ae into the limelight at such a young age. She noted, “She is being molded into a role rather than being supported to understand herself as an individual, and that pressure can have a huge impact on her mental health.”
