Miami Dolphins Seek New General Manager with Unusual Support

The Miami Dolphins are on the lookout for a new general manager and have turned to some unexpected sources for assistance.

Among the names helping out is Hall of Famer Troy Aikman, who has been enlisted as a consultant in this search process, according to reports from ESPN.

The Dolphins’ owner is apparently interested in gaining an “outside perspective” from someone well-connected in the league.

This season has been difficult for the Dolphins, especially when just a few years ago they were seen as a formidable offensive team.

In October, the team parted ways with general manager Chris Grier, who had been with the franchise since 2000 and was promoted to his role in 2016. Last month, head coach Mike McDaniel made the controversial decision to bench Tua Tagovailoa, opting instead for rookie Quinn Ewers, believing he could lead the team to victory more effectively.

During Grier’s nearly decade-long tenure, the Dolphins recorded a 77-80 record and made the playoffs three times—2016, 2022, and 2023—only to be eliminated in the wild card round each time. Their playoff win drought now spans 25 years, the longest in the league.

One possible factor in the Dolphins’ struggles this season may be the injury of star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who tore his ACL in Week 4 against the New York Jets. However, even when Hill participated last year, the team managed just 8 wins against 9 losses and missed out on the playoffs.

Interestingly, 2024 marked Hill’s worst performance since 2019, falling short of 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since then. The previous year, he had led the NFL with nearly 1,800 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, even battling through an ankle injury.

Troy Aikman, a three-time Super Bowl champion and Hall of Fame inductee since 2006, adds an intriguing element to the Dolphins’ ongoing search.
