Cracker Barrel Faces Backlash Over New Year’s Tradition
Cracker Barrel is once again in hot water, this time upsetting loyal customers in the South by abandoning longstanding New Year’s Day customs.
In early September 2025, the chain took a step back from plans to modernize its look—ditching its traditional logo featuring the character Uncle Herschel in favor of a more minimalist design. The backlash was swift, with customers voicing their frustrations as stock prices took a dive.
“Over the past few weeks, we’ve appreciated your thoughts on our logo and restaurants. We’re listening. Today, we’re closed for renovations. If your location hasn’t changed yet, don’t worry.”

Now, the company is facing another public relations challenge. For years, it quietly ceased the tradition of serving black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day, a dish believed to bring good luck for the coming year.
“It’s hard to believe anyone would forget that people in the South eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. As my grandmother used to say, never forget your roots.”

Some responses on social media have been pointed. One user noted how surprising it is that a core traditional meal was dropped without much thought, while another criticized the company’s leadership for straying from its heritage.
“I just learned that Cracker Barrel doesn’t serve black-eyed peas anymore. Someone really needs to reevaluate the direction this company is heading.”

As someone who didn’t grow up with these traditions, I found it fascinating after marrying into a Southern family. Now, I appreciate the ritual of enjoying collards and black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. It’s meaningful.
But, evidently, the corporate decisions made by Cracker Barrel’s management have shaken that connection for many, leaving customers wondering how much more they can take. The company seems to keep missing the mark.
