What are you sipping on right now? Maybe coffee? Or perhaps tea? Then again, it could just be water. The drinks you select throughout the day might significantly affect how long you live. Interestingly, it seems that a mix of these beverages could actually be the most beneficial.

A sizable, long-term study conducted by the University of Cambridge indicates that the combination of drinks you choose plays a role in long-term health.

This study examined over 180,000 adults in the UK over the course of 13 years, analyzing their drinking habits in relation to overall mortality and various disease risks. Participants shared details about their daily coffee, tea, and water consumption, as well as their health history and lifestyle choices. The findings revealed that those who spread their fluid intake across multiple beverages—especially water, coffee, and tea—experienced a lower mortality risk than individuals who relied on just one beverage. The ideal ratio seemed to be two cups of coffee for every three cups of tea, suggesting that if you’ve already had one of each, reaching for a tea next is a good idea.

An interesting pattern emerged when coffee and tea were consumed together. In moderate amounts, complemented by adequate water, this combo appeared most common among participants who maintained the best long-term health. The key takeaway here? Balance matters. Neither excessive coffee nor solely drinking water or tea yielded the best outcomes; instead, mixing them throughout the day was the winning strategy.

The study authors caution that while their findings are based on observational data, which shows correlations without establishing direct causation, the results align with what we generally know. Coffee and tea provide natural compounds beneficial for health, while water is crucial for basic bodily functions. Together, they might help keep the body well-hydrated and reap benefits from antioxidants in coffee and tea—linked to reduced inflammatory reactions, improved blood vessel health, and a more stable metabolism—all elements that can influence life expectancy over time.

Interestingly, simply drinking water alone didn’t automatically lead to the best results. While staying hydrated is essential, this analysis suggests that water is most effective when it’s part of a diverse drinking pattern.
