Mayor Zohran Mamdani Revokes Orders from Predecessor

Newly inaugurated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has taken swift action to revoke several executive orders previously established by former Mayor Eric Adams, notably those that supported Israel.

On his first official day in office, January 1st, Mamdani overturned orders that promoted pro-Israel policies. One significant order from Adams recognized the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, which also included enhanced security measures for synagogues across the city. Additionally, another directive prohibited city agencies from boycotting or divesting from Israel.

The Israel Foreign Ministry responded sharply, stating, “On his very first day as @NYCMayor, Mamdani shows his true face: He scraps the IHRA definition of antisemitism and lifts restrictions on boycotting Israel. This isn’t leadership. It’s antisemitic gasoline on an open fire.”

Mayor Mamdani, who identifies as a Democratic-socialist and is the city’s first Muslim mayor, was sworn in while placing his hand on the Quran. It’s worth noting that New York City boasts the largest Jewish population of any city in the world outside of Israel.

Previously, Adams had cautioned that Jewish New Yorkers should have concerns about a city under Mamdani’s leadership. In response to accusations of antisemitism, Mamdani has actively participated in Hanukkah celebrations last December, attempting to distance himself from such claims.

However, he faced criticism for declining to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada,” often interpreted as inciting violence against Israel. His responses regarding calls for Hamas to cease hostilities during the Gaza conflict have also drawn scrutiny throughout his campaign.

Additionally, Mamdani had indicated on the campaign trail that he would instruct the NYPD to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit the city. This would align with an International Criminal Court warrant alleging war crimes against Netanyahu, which the United States does not recognize.
