Ohio Governor Addresses Allegations of Fraud in Child Care System
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s office has played down the significance of alleged fraud involving the Somali community in the state, comparing it to shoplifting incidents in stores.
DeWine has asserted that Ohio has robust safeguards designed to prevent fraud within its publicly funded child care system. However, spokesperson Dan Tierney stated that the risk of fraud is “very close to zero,” drawing a parallel with grocery store thefts, as noted by cleveland.com.
“For grocery store owners, shoplifting is a reality,” Tierney explained. “You aim to keep those incidents as low as possible, but a complete absence of it is unlikely.”
Reports emerged after citizen journalist Nick Shirley shared a video showcasing child care centers in Minnesota that allegedly received substantial federal funding despite not having any visible children present. This led to other video creators challenging a Somali-operated daycare in Columbus.
Columbus is home to the second-largest Somali population in the U.S., following Minneapolis. The same individuals who monitored facilities in Minnesota also probed a daycare in Columbus, prompting a significant number of Ohio House Republicans to advocate for a comprehensive reform of the state’s child care system.
Sean Moran from Breitbart News reported that Tierney previously mentioned the state’s “strong fraud protections,” acknowledging that, “Unfortunately, this is a cost of doing business.”
Tierney remarked, “If there are those who couldn’t fathom that deception could occur through childcare centers, this is likely a revelation for them. However, such schemes have been part of the landscape for decades.” He refrained from commenting on any specific fraud allegations linked to the Somali community.
“Consequently, we have put robust anti-fraud measures in place to tackle this issue. Regrettably, it is part of the operating costs,” he added.
In light of the allegations suggesting that some child care facilities may be engaging in fraud, Ohio Representative Josh Williams and other Republican members have urged for “surprise inspections of all child care facilities receiving public funds.”
