Hy-Vee Health Exemplar Care expands low-cost memberships in Iowa as ACA tax credits expire
As the end of the year approached, millions of Americans are preparing for significant increases in health insurance premiums. Specifically, those in Iowa are feeling the effects of the expiration of Affordable Care Act tax credits on December 31. To tackle this issue, Exemplar Care, which has teamed up with Hy-Vee for about two years, is broadening its reach across the state.
The membership model starts at $89 per month, and it aims to provide a variety of healthcare services for a flat fee. This plan encompasses not just in-person visits but also virtual care, urgent care, regular physical exams, and on-site plain x-rays. Furthermore, generic medications—such as those for chronic conditions like blood pressure and diabetes—are available without any extra charges.
Dr. Jon Van Der Veer, the founder of Exemplar Care, explains, “When you modify how care is financed, it influences how it’s delivered.” This model deviates from traditional healthcare norms where, typically, one pays a copay but might face hefty bills later due to unmet deductibles. Dr. Van Der Veer emphasizes the importance of establishing relationships with patients. “Once you know someone, you can look after them far more effectively, whether that’s over the phone or through a portal message,” he noted.
He also pointed out that healthcare and insurance are not synonymous. Regular medical appointments and preventive care are crucial for the well-being of the communities served. Exemplar Care is not just reacting to rising costs; it’s proactively making healthcare more affordable and available, especially for those who are uninsured or struggling with expenses.
Currently, Exemplar Care has locations in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Bondurant, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Coralville, and Davenport, with plans to expand further this year.
