The Raiders entered the season with high expectations but have faced disappointment instead.
It seems Super Bowl-winning coach Pete Carroll may only have one season in Las Vegas, with speculation growing that his team could finish with the worst record in the league, according to NFL Network.
The report indicates that a reset is likely, suggesting it would be quite a surprise if he returns for a second season.
Owner Mark Davis hasn’t announced what his plans are yet and tends to wait a couple of days after the season ends—this weekend marks the conclusion of the Raiders’ season with a game against the Chiefs.
With a record of 2-14, optimism has faded. Carroll had hoped to bring stability by acquiring quarterback Geno Smith, but now the team looks to be vying for the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Las Vegas began the year with an unexpected win over the Patriots, giving fans a glimmer of hope.
However, the Raiders have lost 14 out of their last 15 games, only managing to win against the Titans during that stretch, and have now lost ten straight.
This season, Carroll, 74, made headlines by firing offensive coordinator Chip Kelly midseason. Recently, star pass rusher Maxx Crosby left the team, reportedly frustrated with the decision to bench him for the final weeks, something many interpreted as a tanking move.
“While Carroll is aiming to secure another year, there’s a general sense within the league and the organization that Davis may choose to go another route,” noted insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
General manager John Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady are anticipated to play significant roles in advising Davis on the next coaching hire.
If there is a coaching change, the new coach will likely inherit the top pick and may have the chance to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza as the projected No. 1 choice.
The Giants also have a shot at the top pick, but after the Raiders’ recent loss to them, it’s difficult to envision the Giants defeating even a weakened Chiefs squad this weekend.
With anticipated changes, it’s expected that Josh McDaniels will part ways with the team before the 2023 season and that Antonio Pierce will be released after 2024, leading to another coaching shift for the fourth consecutive year.
