Referees criticized for questionable penalty against the Panthers

Controversial Calls in Panthers vs. Buccaneers Game

Some are saying the referees were a bit too lenient during a particular play last Saturday.

In a moment that stirred quite a debate, an offensive pass interference penalty was flagged against Carolina’s Teitairoa McMillan in the third quarter of their 16-14 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Initially, McMillan pushed back on Buccaneers defensive back Benjamin Morrison just before catching a pass from quarterback Bryce Young.

Officials decided to call the play for the push, ignoring what could have been the Panthers’ biggest passing gain at that time.

Following the penalty, Carolina couldn’t convert on a crucial third-and-long situation and had to punt.

This wasn’t the only contentious call against the Panthers.

Later in the game, Carolina safety Nick Scott was flagged for defensive pass interference when it seemed like he merely got tangled up with tight end Cade Otton, which helped place Tampa Bay in scoring range.

However, replays suggested Otton tripped over himself, with Scott positioned a good distance behind him.

Earlier on, Tampa Bay’s linebacker Sarvosia Dennis ripped off Panthers tight end Tommy Tremble’s helmet, but the referees didn’t catch that call.

Reactions from the sports community were quite vocal, with Bill Simmons, founder of The Ringer, labeling McMillan’s penalty as “phony.”

He tweeted something about “fake TMac OPI” and mentioned a few other puzzling calls that irked him.

NFL insider Jonathan Jones expressed his surprise over the referee’s decision to penalize McMillan, stating, “That’s a very tough call from OPI against McMillan. I’m surprised they threw that flag.”

Despite these calls impacting the game, the Panthers still had an opportunity to clinch a win right until the end. In their final drive, Young connected with wide receiver Jalen Coker for an 18-yard pass from their own 21-yard line with just four seconds left.

Unfortunately, the last play was a fumble as Carolina attempted several laterals, falling short of a touchdown and sealing their defeat.

As for the NFC South, all competing teams maintain the same record at 8-9, and the division champion, along with playoff spots, will be determined in Sunday’s Saints vs. Falcons game.

For the Panthers to succeed in the division, the Falcons need a win. Conversely, if the Saints claim victory, the Buccaneers will secure a playoff berth.
