Mel Koberger, Brian Koberger’s sister, shared her reflections on the last Christmas she spent with him just days before law enforcement searched their family home, leading to his arrest for the University of Idaho stabbings.
Mel expressed disbelief and sickness at the news of her brother’s arrest for killing four college students, insisting she had no prior knowledge of his actions. “I’ve always been someone who stands up for what’s right. If I thought my brother had done something wrong, I would have turned him in,” she stated.
Brian, who received his doctorate in criminology from Washington State University, was sentenced in July to four life terms for murdering University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Zana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Gonsalves.
He entered a guilty plea as part of a deal to evade the death penalty.
On November 13, 2022, Brian committed the stabbings in an off-campus apartment in Moscow, Idaho. A few weeks later, during early December, he spent Christmas with his family in Pennsylvania.
Mel revealed that during the holiday, Brian participated in family games and enjoyed vegan cookies his mother had specially baked for him. Interestingly, she even recoiled at a minor injury he sustained while cutting himself with aluminum foil.
Five days post-Christmas, FBI agents arrived at their home and arrested Brian for the brutal killings. Mel, who was not at home, received the shocking news from her sister Amanda, who informed her, “I’m with the FBI, and Brian’s been arrested.” Mel recalled her stunned response, “What for?”
Mel, then pursuing a psychology career, also shared a troubling moment from the past where Brian had stolen her phone to buy drugs. After facing relentless bullying in high school, he struggled with a heroin addiction, which led the family to worry about his future.
However, Brian seemed to have turned his life around after completing drug rehabilitation and pursued psychology at DeSales University before earning his doctorate in criminology. “We were so proud of him for overcoming so much,” Mel said.
Unfortunately, this narrative concludes tragically, as Brian is now facing life in prison. Additionally, Mel discussed the black heart he drew during his sentencing, which many speculated represented his dark side. She clarified that she had created the heart as a gesture of support for him.
Though she hoped to attend the sentencing, Mel couldn’t because she had to care for their father, who was experiencing heart issues.
The notoriety surrounding Brian’s case has led to a surge in online sleuths, many of whom suspect that Mel or other family members might have been aware of his crimes beforehand. “It’s really confusing and painful. You feel as though you’re being victimized, even when you aren’t the actual victim,” she lamented.
