Spicer Critiques Dokoupil’s Claims on News Coverage

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer took issue with CBS news anchor Tony Dokoupil during a segment on “The Huddle.” This happened after Dokoupil announced his intention to emphasize stories about “average Americans” rather than “elites.”

Dokoupil, who has been hosting “CBS Evening News” since January, expressed on Thursday’s broadcast that he often feels the media overlooks key stories. He mentioned that he can relate to those who feel the news doesn’t truly represent their realities. Spicer, however, argued that Dokoupil was part of the media environment he now criticizes, highlighting a contradiction in his stance.

Spicer stated, “I have to go back to his words: ‘I was you.’ No, dude. You were the problem. This isn’t someone crying out for change. Tony is part of the issue. To act like he relates is just ridiculous,” he remarked. “If he had simply admitted he was part of the problem, maybe I’d have respected that more.” He further criticized Dokoupil for attempting to present himself as a hero of the movement.

During his run on “CBS Morning,” Dokoupil had tense exchanges with prominent Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Elizabeth Warren. He pointed out that media narratives often lean too heavily on the perspectives of advocates and elites, rather than on the average American’s viewpoint. He reflected on how he once felt disconnected from what was portrayed in the news.

Additionally, former CBS investigative reporter Katherine Herridge claimed that CBS executives postponed releasing her report on Hunter Biden’s laptop until after the 2022 midterm elections. The network has experienced significant changes, including new leadership under Bari Weiss, leading to staff cuts and shifts in political coverage.
