George Conway, known for his criticism of President Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in New York’s 12th Congressional District. He aims to express his strong opposition to the president and rally support around this initiative.
Once a conservative lawyer and married to Trump’s advisor Kellyanne Conway until their divorce in 2023, Conway is now part of a competitive Democratic primary in Manhattan. He’s leveraging his past connection to Trump to differentiate himself from other candidates.
In a statement, Conway did not hold back: “We have a corrupt president, an insidious president, a criminal president whose undercover agents are taking people off the streets, violating international law, and running the federal government like a mob protection racket,” he remarked.
“I know how to fight these people. They are corrupt and immoral people,” he added, emphasizing his determination. “They will stop at nothing to rig the system for themselves. I’ve been battling Trump for years and nothing is going to stop me.”
Interestingly, New York’s 12th Congressional District became open for Democrats recently after Representative Jerry Nadler announced he wouldn’t be running for re-election in 2026.
Conway’s shift away from conservative politics has been quite notable since Trump became president. In 2019, he helped establish the anti-Trump Lincoln Project alongside other former Republican figures.
Reflecting on his past, Conway acknowledged, “I can understand how people would be upset that I once supported Trump. But I think if people really listen, my views, my philosophy, my values will always be the same.” He even mentioned that he “shed tears of joy” when Trump won the presidency in 2016 and quickly found himself and Kellyanne involved in the administration, moving to Washington, D.C.
The relationship between Conway and Trump has soured over time, with Trump labeling Conway a “loser” after he distanced himself from Republican politics. The tale concludes with Conway criticizing Trump as a narcissist, with Trump countering that Conway is a “frigid loser and husband from hell.”
