Mickey Rourke Denies Involvement in GoFundMe Campaign
Mickey Rourke has firmly stated that he did not seek “fucking charity,” despite a GoFundMe campaign using his name that has already garnered $100,000 to help prevent his eviction.
The 73-year-old actor expressed his confusion and frustration in an Instagram video on Monday, asserting, “That’s not me, okay?”
Rourke, admitting he’s “confused,” emphasized, “You don’t know what a GoFund is.” He insists he’s not reliant on others for support. “If I need money, I don’t ask for some shady charity. I’d rather… well, you get the idea,” he said, making it clear he finds that option distasteful.
He maintained that asking others for money goes against his principles. “I have too much pride to ask strangers, fans, anyone for a dime,” he emphasized, even imploring those who contributed to the fundraiser to refund their donations.
When questioned about who might have initiated the fundraiser, Rourke had some thoughts. “There’s only one person I can think of who would do something like that, and I hope it’s not who I’m thinking of. It’s humiliating… but I believe we’ll get through this,” he remarked.
The campaign apparently began with the “full permission” of Lia-Joel Jones, who claims to be an assistant to Rourke’s manager, Kimberly Hines, mentioned as a beneficiary.
Attempts to contact Jones, Hines, and GoFundMe for statements have gone unanswered.
Rourke has recently faced financial struggles, reportedly owing nearly $60,000 in back rent. Reflecting on his situation, he shared, “I wasn’t very diplomatic about managing my career, and it hasn’t been easy.” He elaborated that he underwent more than 20 years of therapy to deal with his past struggles. “I worked hard to get through it. I’m not that person anymore,” he affirmed.
Currently, Rourke is said to be residing in a luxury hotel in West Hollywood, with rates starting at $550 a night, while also borrowing money from a “great friend.” His financial situation has been described as that of a “rich man’s pauper,” leading a life of paycheck to paycheck.
