Nicolás Maduro Guerra Speaks on Father’s Arrest

Nicolás Maduro Guerra, the son of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, recently shared his thoughts during a livestream, claiming that history will eventually unveil the identity of the “traitor” who played a role in his father’s arrest by the U.S. over the weekend.

Known as “nicolacito” or “The Prince,” Maduro Guerra made this statement hours after a law enforcement operation ordered by former President Donald Trump led to the detention of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Maduro Guerra, born in 1990, is the only son of Maduro, who was previously married to Adriana Guerra Angulo.

“History will show who the traitors are, and we will find out,” Maduro Guerra declared, emphasizing the need to advance the country and raise the Chávez flag while aiming for the safe return of both Maduro and Flores.

He didn’t share specifics about the alleged traitor linked to his father’s arrest, leaving many questions unanswered.

“I’m solid. My family is solid. We’re strong; we’re moving forward. I might get a little emotional, but I wanted to speak from the heart,” he said, expressing gratitude to those who reached out to him.

Maduro Guerra mentioned plans for protests in Venezuela against his father’s detention, but reports indicated no such demonstrations occurred on January 4. Reflecting on recent events, he noted the day was surprising and difficult, but urged his followers to unite and support their leaders on the upcoming days.

At 35, Maduro Guerra has taken on various roles within Venezuela’s socialist government since his father became president following Hugo Chávez’s death in 2013. He currently serves in the National Assembly and holds the title of “Vice President for Religious Affairs” in the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

He appeared in Congress recently, delivering a heartfelt message to both Maduro and Flores, reassuring them that the homeland was safe and that they would soon reunite in Venezuela.

A recent indictment had implicated Maduro Guerra as one of the co-conspirators involved in his father’s drug trafficking operations. Reports stated that he frequently visited Margarita Island, utilizing a plane owned by the state oil company, PDVSA, for transport.

The indictment detailed instances where he was present during these operations and even stated that the plane could go anywhere, including to the United States. It also noted that he was involved in discussions related to moving large amounts of cocaine from Venezuela to Miami.

During Donald Trump’s presidency, sanctions were imposed against Maduro Guerra. The Constituent Assembly established by the Maduro administration took over Venezuela’s National Assembly in 2017, which was the last democratically elected body, until being replaced by Socialist Party members in elections widely seen as illegitimate.
