Potential Early Retirement for Charvarius Ward
Charvarius Ward’s time in the NFL might be coming to an abrupt close. The talented 29-year-old defensive back, currently under a three-year, $54 million deal with the Colts, shared with reporters in Indianapolis that he’s contemplating retirement due to the concussions he has endured over his eight-season career.
“My dad suggested I retire,” Ward mentioned, pondering his next steps. “But honestly, I’m not sure if that’s what I’ll ultimately do. I think I just need to evaluate how I feel this offseason.”
Ward has faced multiple concussions throughout his career—three occurring this very season. The first happened during the season opener, which kept him sidelined for Week 2 against the Broncos. Later, he suffered another concussion in October upon colliding with a teammate while warming up for a game against the Cardinals. The third injury took place in December during a matchup against the Jaguars, mere weeks after his previous concussion.
Since that last injury, he hasn’t set foot on the field.
“This season has been a struggle, dealing with constant headaches,” Ward admitted to the press. “It’s frustrating and painful. I just hope I won’t have to face anything like this again.”
Even if he chooses to play one more season, Ward acknowledges that another concussion could very well push him into retirement. He reflected, “Sometimes, the effects of brain injuries become clear only as you age. I’m still young—so every bit of damage matters.”
Ward is weighing his options carefully. “After football, I still have a whole life ahead of me. My family and kids are also a huge consideration. Decisions, decisions.”
Over his professional journey, which has included stints with the Chiefs, 49ers, and Colts, he has not only claimed a Super Bowl title but has also made a Pro Bowl appearance. He expects to make a decision soon, yet he reassured that if he does indeed decide to play again, it would be without regret.
“When I step away, I want to feel content. I’ve won a Super Bowl, played in several, accumulated significant wealth, attended the Pro Bowl, and been named All-Pro. I’ve achieved everything I aimed for,” he concluded.
