Browns GM uncertain about Shedeur Sanders becoming the starting QB in 2026

Cleveland Browns’ Offseason Plans Post-2026 Season

The Cleveland Browns are gearing up for another offseason, looking to regroup after a disappointing 5-12 record, which ultimately led to the dismissal of head coach Kevin Stefanski on “Black Monday.” One of the primary focuses for general manager Andrew Berry is to determine the team’s approach to the quarterback position as the 2026 season approaches.

There’s a particular interest in Shedeur Sanders, the rookie who stepped in as a starter for the final seven games and ended with a 3-4 record. During Monday’s season wrap-up press conference, Berry was clear about his plans regarding the quarterback situation.

“We’re going to work in the quarterback market,” he stated. “It’s such an important position, so we have to solidify it.”

Given the Browns’ lackluster performance this past season, evaluating every aspect of the team, especially at quarterback, is essential. The new head coach will likely play a significant role in shaping the team’s strategy and choices as they head into September.

Berry mentioned, “I can’t really pinpoint what the solution for 2026 will look like or whether it will come from inside or outside the organization. We’ll be considering that in the coming weeks. And to be honest, the new head coach will have considerable input on decisions as well.”

Sanders garnered interest after being picked in the fifth round, which seemed surprising since he was anticipated to go earlier. The Browns also selected quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round. Initially, veteran Joe Flacco was the Week 1 starter, but after he was traded, Gabriel took over for six games, ending with a disappointing 1-5 record.

After taking over due to a concussion, Sanders got his first win against the Las Vegas Raiders, throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and ten interceptions in his seven starts, completing just over half of his passes.

Berry noted that the Browns have Deshaun Watson under contract for 2026, and he is expected to return despite recent struggles. The team also holds the sixth overall pick in the upcoming draft, which gives them the option to select a quarterback.

This multitude of factors positions Sanders as a potential Week 1 starter, but he will need to prove himself to secure that role. Berry remarked, “I think quarterback is the most critical position in sports. Everyone knows that. Part of it involves evaluating and developing talent. It’s no easy task.”

“It may take time, but our main focus is solidifying that position. This is key for achieving lasting success. Our top priority is to find a leader for the team, both in the short term and long term, whether that’s via internal options, veteran acquisitions, or the draft,” he concluded.

Berry expressed optimism about Sanders’ growth during his rookie season, saying, “We’ve observed significant progress in Shedeur this year, in mental, physical aspects, and how he plays the position. Like many rookies, he’s still on the path of development.”
