Ravens Part Ways with John Harbaugh: Reactions and Implications
Nick Wright recently described the Baltimore Ravens’ choice to let go of head coach John Harbaugh as quite a “risky move,” implying it might ease the process of retaining quarterback Lamar Jackson.
This commentary emerged while Wright was on FS1’s “First Things First,” just as the news broke about Harbaugh’s departure after nearly two decades in Baltimore. He expressed his uncertainty regarding suitable replacements for Harbaugh and, strangely, even the Ravens’ willingness to offer Jackson a fully guaranteed, top-tier contract, especially with two years still on Jackson’s current deal. It’s a bit perplexing, honestly.
“This decision was coming,” he remarked, noting that unless the Ravens make it to the Super Bowl, this was a story that had been looming for weeks.
Wright had previously shared concerns about Harbaugh’s relationship with Jackson, particularly after reports suggested the quarterback had begun to lose faith in his coach.
The Ravens confirmed the coaching change on Tuesday evening, with team owner Steve Bisciotti citing a comprehensive evaluation of the season and the organization’s overall direction as the basis for the decision.
Harbaugh had been with the Ravens for 18 seasons, during which he led the team to one Super Bowl victory. In his farewell statement, he expressed gratitude towards the organization.
Interestingly, while Wright indicated this coaching change might facilitate Jackson’s continued presence in Baltimore, others, like Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, argue it’s not a certainty. He suggested that Jackson’s role in the head coaching hiring process could be crucial in determining his long-term future with the team.
“This is a big deal,” Jones noted. “The Ravens are usually conservative with such moves, so we need to consider who they hire next.”
He added, “If the Ravens genuinely want Lamar Jackson to stay, they will definitely involve him in choosing the new head coach.” This situation is certainly evolving, and it’ll be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
