White House Chief of Staff Backs Trump’s Greenland Proposal

On Monday, White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller expressed support for President Donald Trump’s idea of incorporating Greenland as a U.S. territory during an appearance on CNN’s “The Read.”

Host Jake Tapper posed a question about the possibility of the U.S. forcibly occupying Greenland in the future.

Miller responded cautiously, noting, “Let me take a step back. I know you’re framing this as breaking news, but the president has been quite clear in recent weeks about the U.S. believing Greenland should be part of its security strategy.”

Tapper pointed out that a relevant comment had been made by Miller’s wife shortly after her surgery in Venezuela, highlighting the urgency of the topic.

Miller emphasized that this discussion should last an hour, stating, “This is an important conversation. I want to reiterate that this has been the U.S. government’s official stance since the beginning of this administration, echoing the previous Trump administration’s stance that Greenland should be part of the U.S. The president’s message has been straightforward.”

Tapper then probed, “But is military action against Greenland completely off the table?”

Miller clarified, “This wouldn’t involve military action against Greenland. Its population is only 30,000. The pivotal question is: What right does Denmark have to assert control over Greenland? What grounds do they have for their territorial claims? Greenland should be positioned as part of U.S. interests to secure the Arctic region and protect NATO’s objectives. This is a conversation our country needs to have, a process for nations to engage in.

Tapper countered, suggesting, “So we can’t dismiss the idea of the U.S. using force to occupy Greenland.”

Miller maintained, “The U.S. should have Greenland as part of its territory. There’s no reason to approach this with thoughts of military operations. No nation is going to engage in military conflict with the U.S. over Greenland. That question, frankly, is nonsensical.”
