"You must be completely out of your mind": Eric Adams criticizes Mamdani aide for white supremacist remark

Backlash Against New NYC Mayor’s Appointment

Just days after Zoran Mamdani took office as New York’s mayor, his administration is already under heavy scrutiny. A notable point of contention is the inclusion of housing rights advocate Shea Weaver, who has made controversial remarks linking homeownership to white supremacy.

Among his critics is former Mayor Eric Adams, who voiced his concerns publicly. He stated on social media that “Homeownership is how immigrant, black, brown, and working-class New Yorkers have built stability and generational wealth despite all obstacles.” He found Weaver’s statements to be, well, quite outlandish.

“You have to be completely crazy to call it ‘white supremacy,'” Adams continued, arguing that such sentiments reflect a significant disconnection from reality.

Adams shared a screenshot of Weaver’s 2019 comment, which claimed, “Private property, especially homeownership, is a weapon of white supremacy disguised as ‘wealth-building’ public policy.”

Mamdani has pledged to expand rent controls, riding a wave of public dissatisfaction over rising housing costs. Yet, this policy is contentious; many economists argue that rent control can lead to a decline in available rental units, which may paradoxically drive rents higher.

Weaver also suggested that, in pursuit of social justice, white people should reconsider their relationship with private property. She mentioned in a video that for centuries, real estate has been viewed as an individual asset rather than a shared resource. “We’re going to have to think about it differently,” she emphasized, which could lead to tenants having a revised ownership perspective.

Interestingly, the individual responsible for Mamdani’s appointment has already resigned after facing backlash for anti-Semitic comments on social media. It’s, um, a chaotic start to what many hoped would be a transformative administration.
