Accusations of “Progressive Propaganda” Amid America’s 250th Anniversary Celebrations
As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, the organization responsible for planning the festivities is facing criticism for allegedly promoting what some are calling “progressive propaganda.”
On Tuesday, America250 shared a post praising former President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his concept of “freedoms.” It highlighted a moment from 1941 when FDR described four fundamental freedoms that he believed should be universally enjoyed.
“The four freedoms articulated during a time of uncertainty have played a significant role in shaping what America embodies,” the post remarked, showcasing these freedoms, which are widely recognized, including freedom of speech and freedom of religion. However, FDR introduced some new ideas, such as “freedom from want” and “freedom from fear.”
Brianna Lyman from The Federalist criticized America250 for what she describes as “progressive propaganda,” stating that “‘freedom from want’ is not a constitutional right nor a natural freedom.” She argued that this idea was created to rationalize the expansion of welfare programs and distort American values.
She further stated, “To invent a right like ‘freedom from want’ and present it as a core American tenet is a troubling revision of history by America250.”
In concluding its slideshow, America250 noted, “President Roosevelt articulated these freedoms, and Norman Rockwell depicted them. We aim to embody them.”
Tom Papert from Tennessee Star also commented, noting his surprise that America250 was celebrating FDR’s socialist policies as foundational to American history.
As per the America 250 website, the bipartisan American Semicentennial Commission was set up by Congress in 2016 to orchestrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The management of its social media accounts remains unclear, although the committee includes notable names from both Democratic and Republican backgrounds, along with several private citizens. Rosie Rios, appointed chair of America 250 by President Joe Biden, has also held roles in both the Obama and Biden administrations.
The initiative lists former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, along with their spouses, as “honorary national co-chairs.”
America250 has yet to respond to requests for clarification from Blaze News.
