A remarkable French castle has recently gone up for sale, but its asking price may be out of reach for many interested buyers. However, its nearly 1,000-year history could attract those fascinated by its heritage.
Situated in southeastern Provence, Le Château de la Verdière boasts 100 rooms along with a courtyard, terrace, olive grove, and even a helipad.
The interior includes historic salons, reception areas, vaulted medieval chambers, and a Romanesque church dating back to the 13th century. The estate features 53,820 square feet of living space set on roughly 40 acres of land.
Alain Lebreton, the owner of Provence Verte Sotheby’s International Realty, noted that the castle has been “meticulously restored” over a period from 2003 to 2010.
This restoration focused on reviving 18th-century elements, particularly the Gyp series, a decorative plasterwork style unique to the region.
“Gyp, which refers to a type of upholstery crafted from plaster, undergoes a process of being fired and crushed to become a powder mixed with water that hardens when exposed to air, similar to cane,” clarified Lebreton. “This technique is almost exclusively used in Provence.”
The Gyp series was prevalent from the Middle Ages until the French Revolution, often found on fireplace mantels and architectural features in houses, castles, and townhomes.
Originally, Le Château de la Verdière served as a military stronghold protecting the route between Arles and Castellane during the 10th century.
It underwent significant expansion between 1437 and 1613, including a tower added in the 13th century. Much of its current design, however, originates from the 18th century.
He further added, “The chateau is now ready for new owners who recognize the immense potential of this enchanting property.”
“This residence offers complete privacy and serenity, yet you can reach Saint-Tropez in just 10 minutes by helicopter or Paris in three hours via high-speed rail from Aix-en-Provence,” he explained.
That said, the property is listed at €15 million, or about $17.7 million, meaning prospective buyers will need a solid financial background.
For those doubting the price tag, Lebreton called it “an exceptional rarity.” He emphasized that there are very few castles of this size and quality in southern France.
“La Verdière is truly one of a kind,” he stated.
Lebreton also mentioned that celebrities like George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and George Lucas own properties in Provence, celebrated for its picturesque lavender fields and top-notch vineyards.
Interestingly, some parts of the castle grounds remain undeveloped, offering “an opportunity to incorporate a spa, wellness center, and other luxurious amenities.”
In his words, “This is more than just a residence. It’s a blank canvas for the imagination, a sanctuary where elegance, history, and the natural beauty of Provence converge.”
