Mayor Bass Responds to Palisades Fire Protests

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has criticized the protesters involved in the Palisades fire demonstrations, suggesting the organizers are “profiting from” the community’s suffering as residents continue to cope with the aftermath of the devastating blaze one year later.

During her remarks, Bass expressed concern that local residents shouldn’t be commemorating the first anniversary of the tragic fire with a rally that seemed, in her view, overly combative.

“I think there are individuals who stand to benefit from this situation. It’s really unfortunate,” the mayor shared with ABC 7 while assessing the area impacted by the fire. “They spread misinformation on purpose and capitalized on this disaster via social media and book deals. We need to focus on healing and rebuilding the community for all who wish to return.”

The mayor, a Democrat, has faced significant backlash regarding her administration’s handling of the tragedy, admitting she was “a little” taken aback by the level of frustration directed at her.

“I can understand the emotions involved. If people want to express their grievances to me, I’m here to assist them in healing and getting through this,” she mentioned. “I don’t take it personally, though.”

However, her comments regarding residents profiting from the protests only escalated the criticism. Jeremy Padawer, one of the organizers, responded with a comparison to an abusive relationship.

“I’m not in politics; I’m just a concerned citizen. If we are safe, we have a responsibility to help our neighbors,” he stated. He asserted that he didn’t make any money from the protest and even financed it himself.

Following the tragic fire in 2025, which resulted in at least 31 fatalities and damaged around 18,000 homes and structures, the city has been facing scrutiny for its slow response and communication during evacuation orders. Interestingly, Bass was out of the country when the fire occurred.

Further complicating matters, Bass is now under investigation regarding whether her office manipulated the Los Angeles Fire Department’s after-action report to reflect more positively on their actions. Fire Chief Jamie Moore admitted the report had been modified to dilute its criticism.

“It’s evident that multiple drafts were edited to lessen the sharpness of the final report,” Moore told the Los Angeles Times. “This alteration occurred prior to my appointment, and I ensure such an incident won’t be repeated under my leadership.”

Bass’ office contended that the report was solely crafted and revised by the Fire Department without external interference.

While calling the allegations of tampering “deeply disturbing,” Bass noted that Governor Gavin Newsom has initiated an independent investigation into the response to the fire. “Independent findings will become accessible soon,” she mentioned, hinting at upcoming reports.

As she prepares for a re-election bid in June 2026, there’s a growing list of about 20 candidates, including reality TV personality Spencer Pratt, who declared his candidacy amidst the protests.
