Study Reveals Rapid Weight Regain After Stopping Weight Loss Medications

A recent study has revealed that individuals who discontinue weight loss injections regain all the weight they initially lost in less than two years—this happens much more quickly than for those using other weight loss methods.

The medications in question, often called GLP-1 agonists, were initially designed for diabetes treatment. They work by imitating the glucagon-like peptide 1 hormone, which promotes a feeling of fullness.

Researchers at the University of Oxford conducted this study, published in the BMJ, which examined 37 different studies on weight loss medications that included over 9,300 participants. Treatment lasted an average of about 39 weeks, while follow-ups were conducted for roughly 32 weeks.

The analysis indicated that individuals who stopped taking these medications regained weight at a rate of 0.4 kg per month, with most returning to their original weight in an average of 1.7 years.

Interestingly, on average, participants lost about 8.3 kg during treatment but regained around 4.8 kg within the first year after stopping.

When looking at the speed of weight regain, those who used these medications regained weight nearly four times faster compared to individuals following behavioral plans that might include diet or exercise, regardless of initial weight loss.

Dr. Sam West from the University of Oxford noted that the quick weight gain post-medication isn’t a fault of the drugs themselves. “These medicines really are changing the landscape of obesity treatment and can lead to significant weight loss. Nevertheless, our findings show individuals tend to put weight back on quickly after stopping, which is much different than experiences with behavioral programs,” West explained.

He pointed out that this isn’t a failing of the medication; rather, it underscores obesity’s nature as a chronic condition that often recurs. He cautioned against using these medications as short-term solutions without addressing longer-term weight management strategies, emphasizing the need for primary prevention.

Previous research has indicated that weight loss medications may offer additional health benefits, such as improving cardio-metabolic markers like blood pressure and cholesterol. However, this latest study found these health benefits also diminished and returned to baseline levels about 1.4 years after stopping treatment.

While it has been suggested that individuals often regain lost weight within a year of ceasing medication, this is the first study to provide detailed insights into the pace of weight regain and the time frames associated with it.

In the UK, Wegovy can be prescribed for a maximum of two years, and there’s no such limit for Mounjaro.

Dr. Faye Riley from Diabetes UK commented on the effectiveness of these weight loss medications, noting that they are not quick fixes. “These drugs can aid in managing weight and reducing type 2 diabetes risk. However, proper prescribing, along with tailored support, is crucial to help individuals maintain their weight loss post-medication,” she said.

Katharine Jenner from the Obesity Health Alliance emphasized that regaining weight after halting medications isn’t a personal failing. Instead, it underscores the challenges of a food environment that often promotes unhealthy choices. “These medications could create opportunities to enhance the overall food landscape, from regulating junk food marketing to improving the availability of healthier options,” she added.

An NHS representative stated, “While these new medications are valuable tools for weight loss, they aren’t a cure-all. They must be used alongside behavioral adjustments and lifestyle changes, such as guidance for healthier eating and increased physical activity, to achieve lasting results.” The NHS is also expanding its weight management services to help individuals lose weight in a safe and sustainable manner.
