A Town of Vacant Land, Minimal Building

One Year After the Devastating Storm

On the evening of January 7, 2025, Los Angeles experienced a catastrophic storm that ignited two of the city’s most destructive wildfires: the Eaton Fire in Altadena and the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades. Returning to the scene of the Eaton Fire just before the anniversary, it was striking to find that Altadena has seen little rebuilding, with many areas now just vacant lots.

A recent visit to the neighborhood revealed a stark reality. Instead of charred homes, there were simply empty spaces. The slow pace of progress was evident, as what should have been bustling construction sites felt remarkably quiet. It’s hard to wrap your head around the lack of activity—Altadena seems almost too peaceful given the circumstances.

Where views once showed a busy skyline, they now expose vast stretches of nothingness. The landscape is a reminder of lost history, yet it feels oddly reminiscent of a town’s early days, devoid of structures. As noted in a recent video, the repetition of vacant lots paints a story of uncertainty, with many neighborhoods still waiting for rebuilding to begin. A lot hinges on insurance claims and permits.

However, there are signs of hope among some families, like the Halpins, who gained attention last year for a poignant video of them singing hymns amid the destruction of their home. They broke ground on their new home last summer, slowly inching back toward normalcy.

“We’re starting to see light at the end of the tunnel,” Peter Halpin shared in December. “Being back in the area helps us plan and distracts us from the emotional weight of what’s happened.”

Jackie Halpin expressed, “We were all pretty much in shock after the trauma. Yet seeing progress is hopeful. There’s still sadness, of course, but it feels like we’re moving forward.”

While navigating the rebuilding process, the couple noted that local officials were somewhat overwhelmed but were relieved that there weren’t as many bureaucratic hurdles as they had anticipated.

“They really needed to involve experts to help with the permits,” Peter advised.

For other families facing similar disasters, the Halpins underscored the unmatched value of community support. “Lean on others,” Jackie advised. “Our faith community has been amazing.”

Their son, Andrew, emphasized the importance of maintaining faith and persistence despite hardships.

“Pray, hope, and don’t stress too much,” he suggested. “With faith, anything is achievable, though it doesn’t mean everything will be easy.”

Amid the devastation, there was a silver lining. Christmas Tree Lane, a cherished spot in Altadena, survived the wildfires largely intact. This past holiday season, it shone brightly with colorful lights, marking its 105th year. A year after its survival, it stood as a symbol of resilience.

“Seeing it still here was such a mixed bag of joy and relief,” reflected a reporter who remembered standing in the same spot a year ago, surprisingly comforted by the sight of those trees still standing.

The Eaton Fire resulted in significant losses, destroying about 9,500 structures, displacing countless residents, and costing an estimated $10 billion. A year later, there’s a growing sense of frustration and anxiety among residents seeking answers. One resident voiced feeling “stuck,” highlighting challenges with her insurance provider, which has yet to cover her living expenses since disaster struck.

While the precise cause of the Eaton Fire is still under investigation, a lawsuit has been filed against Southern California Edison for allegedly neglecting power line maintenance, which prosecutors claim contributed to the fire’s ignition. Some settlement funds for affected households have begun to materialize.

There’s an ongoing sentiment that the fires might have been prevented or less devastating, which has sparked anger among survivors and added complexity to ongoing political debates and legal actions. Authorities have initiated various investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fires.

In spite of the extensive damage and loss, the Altadena community remains steadfast, unwilling to let hope extinguish in their hearts.
