Charlie Volker Announces Retirement from Bobsledding

Charlie Volker, a former running back at Princeton University and an Olympian, has decided not to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. He made this announcement after revealing his retirement from bobsledding due to health concerns, even though he was seen as a leading candidate for the U.S. bobsled team.

At just 28 years old, Volker took to social media to share his news less than two weeks after being named to the Olympic team by USA Bobsled and Skeleton.

“After sustaining a concussion earlier this season and facing challenges during my recovery, I have consulted with our sports medicine team and am officially retiring from bobsledding,” Volker posted on Instagram. “I like to remind myself that everything happens for a reason, but, honestly, it’s really tough not to be there.”

Volker made his Olympic debut at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, where he participated in both the two-man and four-man bobsled events, finishing 27th and 10th, respectively.

“I’m grateful for the support from my teammates, coaches, and everyone involved. Thank you to all who have cheered for me along this journey. I will cherish the encouragement and love you’ve given me,” he expressed in his post.

As the year began, he seemed to be a strong candidate for the Olympic team, especially after establishing a team record at the Push Championship in September. However, given that he did not compete in any World Cup races this season, his retirement perhaps isn’t entirely unexpected.

Volker, recognized as a standout player at Princeton, ended his college career with 1,994 rushing yards, ranking seventh in the program’s history, while his 14 touchdowns in 2018 tied for sixth. His contributions to his team will certainly be remembered.
