Weinstein’s Court Appearance and Plea Bargain Discussion
On Thursday, Harvey Weinstein, looking quite pale, was brought into a Manhattan courtroom where he was attempting to negotiate a plea deal. This deal might help him avoid a third trial related to sexual assault charges.
The 73-year-old disgraced Hollywood producer was wheeled into the courtroom as part of a hearing concerning allegations of raping an up-and-coming actress at a hotel in Midtown.
Judge Curtis Farber scheduled a trial for March 3. Following this, Weinstein’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, mentioned that he would talk with prosecutors about a potential plea deal.
Aidala expressed frustration about Weinstein’s situation, emphasizing that his client, who has serious health issues, is confined at Rikers Island. “He’s basically in the worst position,” Aidala declared in court. “We need to get him out of there as soon as possible.”
After a brief discussion outside the courtroom with Weinstein, Aidala announced that the former Miramax executive was open to pursuing a plea agreement. “Your Honor, I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Weinstein, and I would like to move forward with a plea agreement,” he shared.
In the upcoming trial, Jessica Mann is expected to testify again about the alleged rape incident from 2013 at the DoubleTree Hotel. When she took the stand during her retrial in June, she became emotional, referring to Weinstein as a “monster” after he had said he wasn’t interested in sex with her. “The monster side is going to come out,” she had stated.
Initially, Weinstein was found guilty in 2020 of raping Mann and of forcing oral sex on Mimi Haley, a former production member of Project Runway. However, that verdict was later overturned by a surprising ruling from the New York State Supreme Court of Appeals. In the retrial, he was convicted again regarding Haley’s charges, but the jury could not reach a decision on Mann’s case.
