Pro-Life Leaders Respond After Trump Calls for 'Flexibility' on the Hyde Amendment

Pro-Life Leaders React to Trump’s Comments on the Hyde Amendment

Key figures in the pro-life movement are voicing their concerns following President Trump’s recent remarks suggesting that Republicans should be “flexible” regarding the Hyde Amendment. This amendment, a crucial component for many in the movement, prohibits taxpayer funding for abortions.

During a discussion with House Republicans, Trump, who previously campaigned in support of the Hyde Amendment, adopted a softer stance. He mentioned that the party needs to be “a little bit flexible on Hyde” while negotiating a health care bill.

“You know, you’ve got to be a bit flexible. You’ve got to work on things. You have to be creative,” Trump stated.

The Hyde Amendment was established in the 1970s and has prevented federal funds from covering abortions since its inception in 1976, shortly after the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade. Initially passed by a Democratic-led Congress, it has been repeatedly renewed with support from nearly all recent presidents, regardless of party affiliation. Although Joe Biden has opposed it, funding was still appropriated by Congress.

Pro-life organizations quickly condemned Trump’s suggestion. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, emphasized that opposing taxpayer-funded abortions is a longstanding principle for Republicans. “To suggest that Republicans should be ‘flexible’ is to abandon this decades-old commitment. If Republicans retreat from Mr. Hyde, they’ll definitely face losses this November,” she warned.

Lila Rose, founder of Live Action, also expressed strong opposition. She asserted, “Republicans must stand firm for the sake of human life. There will be no exceptions. Sacrificing Hyde means sacrificing innocent human children.”

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, called for pro-life representatives in Congress to remain steadfast. She stated, “The Obamacare reform bill must include Mr. Hyde, or it will be a pro-abortion vote.”
