A mother from North Carolina has been taken into custody for negligence after her young son was discovered submerged in a water container on their front porch, ultimately leading to his death, according to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.
On December 11, around 4:30 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call regarding a missing toddler in Jacksonville. When officers arrived, they found a 16-month-old boy unconscious in the container.
Emergency responders quickly initiated life-saving efforts, and the boy was transported to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators found that the mother’s negligence played a role in the child’s death. Elizabeth Marie Holderness, 30, later surrendered to the sheriff’s office.
Holderness is facing charges of felony negligent homicide, negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, and six counts of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. The sheriff’s office noted that she exhibited a reckless disregard for human life.
According to reports, an arrest warrant was issued that claims Holderness used illegal drugs in another room while her child was in her care for an extended period.
After her initial court appearance, she was set with a $75,000 unsecured bail, which she posted later the same day.
Comments on the sheriff’s Facebook post reveal mixed sentiments. Some expressed concern over Holderness’s decisions, while others felt differently.
- One commenter remarked, “Maybe we shouldn’t do drugs.” They emphasized the need for better accountability.
- Another stated, “Everyone’s making excuses. This boy was just 16 months old. Never let children out of your sight. Period.” This sentiment echoed a feeling that the mother should have done better.
- One user passionately added, “Don’t have children if you’re not fully committed to their care! You’re literally responsible for their lives!”
