Armed Robbery Attempt in Memphis
Video footage released by Memphis police on Monday shows an attempted robbery at a convenience store where a suspect brandished a firearm. This incident took place at the Quick Check on Alsea Road around 10 a.m., according to WHBQ TV.
The footage captures a man in a white hoodie pulling out a gun inside the store. Interestingly, as he did so, he suddenly turned and made a hasty retreat instead of continuing the robbery.
In a surprising turn of events, the store clerk responded by firing at the armed suspect, ultimately hitting him.
Later that day, police shared additional doorbell camera footage that showed the suspect running into a nearby residence unmasked and dressed in an orange sweatshirt. This footage also highlighted a noticeable stain on the suspect’s chest, prompting further investigation.
Authorities described the suspect as being between 18 to 22 years old, around 5 feet 5 inches tall, with a distinct tattoo above one of his eyebrows. They are actively seeking information regarding his whereabouts.
In terms of his attire, he was reported to be wearing black pants and shoes, along with a red shirt beneath a white hoodie.
According to Tennessee’s stand-your-ground law, the clerk was justified in using force when he felt there was an immediate threat to his life or safety. This legislation supports the idea that once a firearm is drawn, a reasonable belief of danger exists, allowing for self-defense without an obligation to retreat.
Police are urging anyone with information about the suspect to contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
