Treasury Secretary Addresses Fraud in Minnesota

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held a press conference on Friday, addressing the alarming rise of fraud in Minnesota, a topic that has gained significant media attention recently.

“I’m hopeful we can effectively tackle this issue of waste, fraud, and abuse, making sure that federal aid reaches those who truly need it instead of falling into the hands of criminals,” Bessent stated.

He criticized state leadership, singling out Governor Tim Walz and other left-wing officials for what he described as “gross negligence,” allowing taxpayer fraud to “spiral out of control.”

Bessent continued by revealing that funds meant for vulnerable populations, such as children in need and services for seniors, were misappropriated by individuals exploiting the system, some even non-citizens.

According to estimates, fraudsters in Minnesota have misappropriated at least $300 million that was designated for disadvantaged children.

He also indicated that the Treasury Department is actively looking into these fraudulent activities, with findings suggesting that some of the stolen funds may have been sent overseas to groups like al-Shabaab from Somalia.

Bessent reassured the public that President Donald Trump and his administration are dedicated to “restoring accountability” and getting the situation in Minnesota back on track.

In light of the ongoing fraud, Bessent introduced several initiatives aimed at addressing the issue, including investigations into certain financial services that might have facilitated overseas transactions, a targeted reporting threshold for specific counties, and a new IRS task force focused on fraud stemming from the pandemic.

Moreover, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network has issued alerts to assist financial institutions in recognizing and reporting fraudulent activity tied to federal child nutrition programs. The Treasury Department is also aiding Minnesota’s law enforcement in identifying these crimes.

“We won’t let the incompetence of Governor Walz hinder our efforts to bring justice to those responsible,” Bessent declared.

The protocols set forth in Minnesota are intended to serve as a foundation for a broader national initiative.

A reporter questioned Bessent about the governor’s possible complicity in the fraud’s escalation.

“We are thoroughly investigating all possibilities to gauge the extent of involvement, whether it’s mere negligence or something more severe,” Bessent replied.

When asked if officials from Somalia had encouraged their citizens to relocate to Minnesota to exploit the system, he stated, “We don’t yet fully understand the intricacies of this financial crisis that Governor Walz has permitted.”

“Is this orchestrated from overseas? Or is it a homegrown issue that Governor Walz has allowed to thrive right here? Only time will reveal the truth,” he concluded.
