Nets Face Off Against Veteran Clippers
The NBA’s oldest team proved a tough competitor for its youngest counterpart.
Brooklyn, in the midst of a youth-focused rebuild, faced a 121-105 defeat to the experienced Clippers at Barclays Center on Friday.
The Nets featured a record-setting five first-round rookies, with all but one stepping onto the court. It was an educational experience, albeit a difficult one.
James Harden made a significant impact, scoring a game-high 31 points primarily by driving to the basket, hitting 10 of 13 attempts. His efforts helped the Clippers build a 16-point lead, as he tallied 15 points in just the first quarter.
Kawhi Leonard, currently dealing with a sprained right ankle, contributed 26 points overall, with 13 coming in the fourth quarter. The Clippers showcased their ability to penetrate Brooklyn’s solid defense, even with the return of the 40-year-old Chris Paul.
Head coach Jordi Fernandes reflected on the challenge, noting, “This really is a new experience for us. We’re up against Hall of Fame caliber players who our guys haven’t defended before. It’s going to be crucial to navigate the isolations, pick-and-rolls, and coverages.” He added that the Clippers’ style differs from what the Nets typically encounter, highlighting the importance of focus, communication, and effort.
The Nets were clearly outmatched.
Against the Clippers, they managed to shoot 59.2 percent overall and 58.3 percent from three-point range.
Interestingly, the average rebuild time for Brooklyn stands at 23.7 years, the shortest in the league, while the Clippers have been a solid team this season.
Lottery pick Egor Demin topped the Nets with 19 points, shooting 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, while Michael Porter Jr. contributed 18 points, six assists, and several steals, although he had an uncharacteristically poor night with no successful three-point attempts.
Currently sitting at 11-24, the Nets are fifth in the lottery standings but are only marginally behind their competition for a better position.
On a bright note, the Clippers improved to 8-2 after a slow start of 6-21.
A strong run by Brooklyn in the first quarter didn’t hold, as they quickly fell back into a 16-point deficit after a Clippers surge that extended from the end of the first to the second quarter, leading to 14 uninterrupted points against them.
Even Brooklyn’s all-time leading scorer had inconsistent moments, as rookie Danny Wolf’s shot attempt was blocked by former Nets center Brook Lopez late in the third.
