Ethan Hawke Reflects on First Kiss with Gwyneth Paltrow
Ethan Hawke recently shared that his first kiss with Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t quite meet his expectations, yet it’s a memory he still holds onto years later.
The Oscar-nominated actor described his first real kiss as “unfortunate,” recalling that it occurred during a game of Truth or Dare with his “Great Expectations” co-star.
During an episode of “Today with Jenna & Friends,” Hawke revealed that he considers this kiss to be his biggest regret in Hollywood, especially since it happened off-camera instead of during filming back in 1998.
“Honestly, I was so disappointed. I couldn’t even tell her this because I didn’t want it to feel awkward,” he admitted. “I wanted to kiss her, but it just didn’t happen in that moment,” he added, reflecting on the situation.
In a more recent chat, Paltrow and Hawke reminisced about their youthful interactions, pondering over simpler times before smartphones and social media dominated communication. Hawke mentioned how they would frequently encounter each other in various social settings, such as parties and theaters, which was, he noted, “so much fun.” There were, of course, no constant phone interruptions back then.
They even pinpointed the exact night when their kiss took place, recollecting how casual and unplanned it was, which, in hindsight, continues to resonate with Hawke’s memory.
“Remember that first time we flirted? It was at my apartment during Truth or Dare,” Paltrow reflected, describing it as a significant highlight in their early friendship.
Despite the nostalgia, Hawke reiterated that the setting didn’t quite live up to the romantic ideals he once harbored. “I didn’t want that to happen,” he stated, almost humorously suggesting he had other things on his mind at the time.
Later in their talk, they touched on their filming experiences for “Great Expectations,” including a controversial scene that Paltrow firmly turned down.
Hawke recalled the moment director Alfonso Cuaron proposed an explicit love scene, prompting Paltrow to react with disbelief. “I thought, ‘Oh my god, my dad is going to have a heart attack,'” she exclaimed, highlighting her surprise.
In the film, a modern adaptation of the classic novel by Charles Dickens, Hawke portrays Finn, an artist deeply infatuated with Paltrow’s character, Estella.
