Indiana Hoosiers Claim Historic Win in Peach Bowl
Curt Cignetti wasn’t about to overlook the significance of Friday night’s College Football Playoff semifinal. The Indiana Hoosiers made history by securing their first-ever chance at a national title after taking down Oregon State with a decisive score of 56-22 in the Peach Bowl.
Now, the Hoosiers will be watching the footage of No. 10 Miami’s incredible performance as they gear up to face the number one ranked Hoosiers, who are now 15-0.
While the celebrations unfolded at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Cignetti had a more immediate thought on his mind. ESPN’s Molly McGrath asked him when he might stop to appreciate how special this moment truly is, figuring he was already focused on the upcoming game. But Cignetti set the record straight.
“I’m not thinking about the next game. I’m thinking about opening a beer,” he responded honestly.
This season marks a remarkable achievement for the Hoosiers, as they become the fifth team in the modern era to finish with a perfect 15-0 record. They also now seek to become the first to reach 16-0, and interestingly, they are only the second team in history to play with leather helmets, joining the 1894 Yale team.
Under Cignetti’s leadership, the program has seen a dramatic turnaround—from one of the Big Ten’s least successful teams to potentially one of the most dominant seasons in college football history. The Hoosiers maintained their undefeated record and gained momentum as they moved through the playoffs. After defeating Ohio State to win the Big Ten championship, they overwhelmed Alabama with a score of 38-3 in the Rose Bowl quarterfinals, thanks to Fernando Mendoza’s impressive passing performance of 192 yards and three touchdowns.
Now, Indiana aims to secure the Big Ten’s third consecutive national title, following victories from Ohio State and Michigan in the previous two years. The Hoosiers have showcased strong, balanced gameplay all season long, which sets them apart from many other teams.
