Tennessee mother attacked by pit bull had to amputate her leg that was severely injured.

A mother from Tennessee underwent leg amputation after a pit bull clamped down on her leg while she tried to break up a dogfight in her home. The incident left her in a precarious situation, with her injury described as her leg “dangling by a thread.”

Amanda Mears, 42, was getting ready to walk her American pit bull/American Staffordshire mix, Dennis, when an American bully named Ralphie escaped from her bedroom and attacked Dennis. According to reports, when Mears intervened, Dennis wouldn’t release his grip on her leg, prompting her to use her other leg to try and force him away.

Reflecting on the harrowing event from December 10, she shared, “When he lunged at my other dog, Ralphie, I got in between them, and Dennis was clinging to my leg and wouldn’t let go.” She mentioned feeling adrenaline rush through her body, which masked her pain as she fought to free herself.

In the chaos, she didn’t even realize she had been bitten on one hand, nor did she notice a severe injury to her arm as she was focused on managing the situation while instructing her 10-year-old son to stay put.

Once she was able to get away, she was taken to a Nashville hospital, where doctors assessed her injuries. They informed her that her leg was in such a compromised state that amputation was one option, alongside a series of painful surgeries over the next couple of years.

“My legs were dangling, and I couldn’t stand up,” she recalled, noting that she owns four dogs, one of which was abandoned by a previous owner.

Mears ultimately opted for amputation, reasoning that enduring multiple surgeries would only lead to constant pain.

Three days later, she had surgery on her arm. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist her with the medical costs involved.

Additionally, Mears plans to get a prosthetic leg to aid her mobility in the future.

After spending a week in the hospital, she made the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize Dennis in order to protect her son.

“Dennis has always been the sweetest dog. He’s never been aggressive before,” she expressed, highlighting how difficult the choice was despite clearly prioritizing her son’s safety.

“It was a painful decision, but not a difficult one,” she concluded, explaining her deep bond with Dennis, whom she had raised since he was just two weeks old.
