Neighbors of a Chicago surgeon, now suspected of killing his ex-wife and her husband, expressed disbelief upon learning that they shared a luxury apartment with someone linked to such heinous acts.
Michael David McKee was taken into custody Saturday in Rockford, Illinois, facing allegations of fatally shooting Spencer and Monique Tepe in their upscale home in Columbus, Ohio, on December 30.
Dr. Geralind Kolarik, who met McKee while living in the same high-end Lincoln Park building, said she had no reason to suspect anything was amiss. “He didn’t seem like the type to be involved in something like this,” Kolarik remarked, adding, “You never really know the people around you. They could be capable of anything.”
Kolarik reflected on their casual interactions, recalling moments spent chatting over barbecues by the pool. “I was just sitting there, enjoying a nice day, and then to find out he was involved in something so dark—it’s shocking,” she noted, emphasizing the unexpected nature of the revelation.
The attack occurred between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. in the Tepe’s home, according to police reports. They disclosed that no weapons were found, nor were there signs of forced entry. Spencer and Monique were discovered with apparent gunshot wounds; fortunately, their young children and family dog were unharmed.
“How do you explain to a child that their parents were here one moment and gone the next?” Kolarik questioned, highlighting the true victims in this tragic scenario.
Concern grew when Spencer Tepe’s workplace reported his absence on December 30, prompting a 911 call. Later in the morning, a friend, worried about the family’s well-being, found the bodies during a wellness check.
Surveillance footage has shown a “person of interest” in the vicinity of the couple’s home during the early hours surrounding the shooting.
Authorities traced a vehicle back to the Wineland Park neighborhood where the couple lived. It was connected to McKee, who had resided in Virginia before amicably separating from Monique in May 2017 and filing for divorce.
Reportedly, the couple was murdered just a month shy of their fifth wedding anniversary.
In the wake of McKee’s arrest, the Tepe family stated, “Nothing can undo the devastating loss of two lives taken too soon,” expressing gratitude for the community’s support and urging the justice system to ensure accountability.
“Monique and Spencer will forever remain in our hearts,” they continued, pledging to care for the two children left behind and to honor the couple’s memory.
McKee has been charged with two counts of murder and is currently held in Winnebago County Jail, with a court appearance scheduled for Monday.
