49ers Edge Eagles in Playoff Clash
In a thrilling game in Philadelphia, Brock Purdy connected on a crucial 6-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey late in the fourth quarter, leading the San Francisco 49ers to a 23-19 victory over the reigning Super Bowl champions. The 49ers also executed a trick play, with wide receiver Jauan Jennings throwing a touchdown pass. Next week, they will face the top-seeded Seattle Seahawks in the NFC divisional playoff, having split their season series.
“We just focused on one play at a time,” McCaffrey noted after the game. “It felt like a 12-round fight. We kept saying that and just had to stay the course. No matter the ups and downs, we trusted each other, and we pulled through.” Maybe it was that trust that made the difference.
Purdy had a solid performance, throwing for 262 yards in a notable road win. This was significant for him, as he had missed a previous game against the Eagles due to an injury during the NFC title match three seasons ago.
Though Purdy faced two interceptions from All-Pro cornerback Kunyon Mitchell, the Eagles could only capitalize on one of those turnovers with a meager three points.
The 49ers were almost without star tight end George Kittle, who exited the game late in the first half due to a right Achilles tendon injury.
As the Eagles struggled, they found themselves losing by a single point when Jennings’s trick play resulted in McCaffrey scoring a 29-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, putting the 49ers ahead 17-16.
Jennings had a noteworthy game, contributing not just the touchdown pass but also 66 receiving yards and 48 rushing yards.
Jake Elliott’s 33-yard field goal gave the Eagles a brief lead of 19-17, but Philadelphia faced challenges with their offense throughout the game under offensive coordinator Kevin Pattullo. Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts managed only 168 passing yards and one touchdown. The Eagles struggled significantly, tallying just 36 yards on 16 plays in the third quarter, which hindered their momentum from a 13-10 halftime lead.
In the game’s final moments, Hurts’s attempt to lead a comeback fizzled out with an incomplete pass on fourth-and-11 with just 43 seconds remaining.
“Our team is fighting,” McCaffrey expressed with pride. “I really love this group. It’s hard to express how much this team means to me.”
The game started with both teams exchanging touchdowns, but it quickly turned into a defensive struggle. Purdy, who had suffered a torn ligament in a previous encounter with the Eagles, efficiently completed all three of his passes for 74 yards in a drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown pass to DeMarcus Robinson. Robinson, by the way, had a standout performance with 111 receiving yards.
The Eagles managed to tie the game with a touchdown run from Dallas Goedert, who has become a reliable target in the red zone, showing off his skills again by finding the end zone on a 1-yard sweep. Hurts added another score with a 9-yard rushing touchdown that put the Eagles ahead 13-7.
Eddie Pineiro kicked a 36-yard field goal for the 49ers, knocking the Eagles’ lead down to 13-10 at halftime.
As the first half wrapped up, emotions ran high when Eagles receiver A.J. Brown had a heated exchange with head coach Nick Sirianni, leading to him being pulled from the coach by the team’s security officer.
