The Eagles’ Play-Calling Woes
The Eagles haven’t exactly been known for their creativity this season.
In a perplexing decision, offensive coordinator Kevin Pattullo opted to send all four receivers on go routes during a critical fourth-and-11 play, located at the 49ers’ 21-yard line. This was particularly frustrating for fans, especially since the Eagles were down 23-19.
It’s worth noting that placing all four pass catchers close to the first down marker began to feel a bit, well, counterintuitive.
To add to the madness, 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh employed a cover-four scheme that matched up perfectly against the Eagles’ go routes.
Former NFL player Emmanuel Acho took to social media, expressing disbelief: “Is this really what Kevin Pattullo and Nick Sirianni came up with? It’s pretty disappointing.”
After the game, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni faced reporters and acknowledged, “That last play didn’t go as planned.”
With the Eagles attempting four vertical routes against Cover 4, the 49ers had an advantage, as they could effectively play seven defenders against just four pass-catching Eagles players.
One might wonder if this strategy hinted at a lack of confidence in star receiver AJ Brown. After all, Hurts ended up targeting tight end Dallas Goedert, who was surrounded by three defenders.
Brown had a rough outing in the playoffs, dropping four passes and even having a heated exchange with his coach on the sidelines.
The aftermath of Philadelphia’s loss might signal the end of Brown’s tenure there. He didn’t speak to the media after the game, instead opting to focus on comforting teammates as he left the field.
As the Eagles ponder their future, there’s undeniable tension, especially with Brown looking less than satisfied in Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, while the Eagles contemplate their offseason plans, the 49ers gear up for a rematch with the Seattle Seahawks this Saturday, fighting for a chance in the NFC Championship Game.
