Bill Maher Reacts to Minneapolis Shooting Incident
Comedian Bill Maher expressed his thoughts on the tragic shooting of a woman in Minneapolis by federal agents, calling it “horrible” and unnecessary. However, he also made light of the celebrities who wore “Be Good” pins in honor of Renee Good during the Golden Globe Awards.
Among those donning the pins were actor Mark Ruffalo and comedian Wanda Sykes, while several others used their platforms to make political statements. When USA Today asked Maher about this on the red carpet, he laughed and said, “I just came here today for show business. It was a terrible thing to happen, and it shouldn’t have happened. It wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t acted like such thugs. But I don’t need to put a pin on it.”
During the event, Sykes, who was presenting Maher with an award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, took a jab at him, suggesting he should tone it down. Maher didn’t seem amused by her remarks. Ultimately, the award went to Ricky Gervais. Sykes further poked fun at Maher’s previous jokes about transgender issues.
The incident that led to Renee Good’s death involved federal officials claiming she clashed with ICE agents and allegedly attempted to run one of the officers over. This shooting has drawn significant criticism of the Trump administration and the actions of ICE. While federal officials insisted the agents acted in self-defense, many Democratic officials decried the shooting as unjustified. Reports indicate the operative who shot was injured in a separate incident last year related to a fleeing driver and that Good had been following federal officers earlier that day.
Good was identified as an immigration activist and a member of a group known as ICE Watch, which aims to track and oppose federal immigration enforcement in several sanctuary cities across the nation.
