Town Looks to Purchase Luxury Mansion for Public Beach Access
In an upscale Long Island town, officials are considering a nearly $26 million purchase of a luxury 11-bedroom oceanfront mansion, which they plan to demolish. This initiative aims to provide residents access to a public beach along a 472-foot stretch of waterfront on Meadow Lane.
According to reports, the Southampton City Council is also looking to safeguard the natural habitat of the town’s coastal dunes. The mansion, located at 150 Meadow Lane, is among the town’s priciest properties, situated near the Southampton Village helipad frequented by the elite commuting to New York City. This move could help enhance coastal restoration efforts—something residents might find pretty appealing.
I mean, not everyone may see a $26 million mansion as a worthwhile investment just to tear it down. But Jacqueline Fenlon, director of the town’s Community Conservation Fund, mentioned ongoing efforts focused on prioritizing coastal properties for habitat conservation.
The mansion, previously owned by Francis Katz, was listed for about $27 million and, back in 2021, it was on the market for just under $25 million before being taken off. Now, the town’s offer stands at $25.8 million, which, honestly, is quite the sum for a piece of land, even if it comes with some lofty expectations.
Bob DeLuca, president of the nonprofit environmental advocacy group Group for the East End, commented on the potential benefits of the purchase. He noted that acquiring oceanfront land could alleviate long-term public costs and reduce risks for those living in coastal areas. Plus, the acquisition would help protect unique wildlife, including snowy owls and short-eared owls.
It seems like this project isn’t just about securing a beach; it’s also about community safety and creating public access, which are, well, pretty great benefits when you think about it.
