Matt Damon shares Clint Eastwood's frank remark on the set of 'Invictus'

Matt Damon Reflects on His Experience Working with Clint Eastwood

While looking back over his extensive career, Matt Damon recalled a memorable experience with Clint Eastwood. During an appearance on “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” Damon shared insights about their collaboration on the 2009 film “Invictus.”

Conan O’Brien was curious about the directors Damon has worked with and mentioned how he found Eastwood’s directing style somewhat puzzling. Damon, who played a South African rugby player in “Invictus,” reminisced about how challenging it was to master the character’s accent.

He mentioned spending six months working with a dialect coach, preparing for the role. “It was a lot of work,” Damon reflected, adding, “I showed up ready, excited to work with one of my heroes.”

On the first take, Damon delivered his lines, and Eastwood responded abruptly, saying, “Cut, print, move on.” Damon wanted to give it another shot—after all, he hadn’t even worn a costume yet. He recalled asking Eastwood, “Wait a minute, boss,” to which Clint replied, “Why do you want to waste everyone’s time?”

Despite the apparent harshness of Eastwood’s comments, Damon emphasized that there was an underlying kindness in his message. He described Eastwood as a wonderful person, recounting a more recent project where he worked closely with a young, inexperienced actor. They shared many takes in order to capture the essence of a pivotal scene.

According to Damon, Eastwood’s approach could be summed up as valuing efficiency: “As long as you don’t push every shot too hard, the crew will go the extra mile for you.” He continued, noting that professional actors usually bring a solid performance, allowing the work to flow smoothly.

Damon’s anecdotes reveal not only the challenges of being an actor but also the unique dynamics that come from working with established directors like Eastwood.
