Allegations Against Former Police Chief’s Ex-Husband in Ohio Murder Case
A former police chief has disclosed several potential reasons behind her ex-husband allegedly murdering an Ohio dentist and his wife, suggesting that something recent might have triggered the incident.
Michael David McKee, 39, was arrested on December 30 in Rockford, Illinois, on suspicion of killing Spencer Tepe, 37, and Monique Tepe, 39. Authorities discovered both victims dead from gunshot wounds in their Columbus, Ohio home. Court documents indicate that McKee is Monique’s ex-husband.
Monique filed for divorce in 2017, just two years after their marriage in 2015. Since 2020, McKee has lived in various states like Virginia, Nevada, and Illinois. Most recently, he had moved to Chicago and worked as a vascular surgeon in the Rockford area.
In a court appearance in Rockford, McKee waived his right to extradition, and his lawyer indicated he would plead not guilty upon returning to Ohio. He faces charges of premeditated aggravated murder linked to the deaths of Spencer and Monique. McKee was taken into custody shortly before noon at the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, according to prison records.
McKee showed little emotion during his court appearance, responding with a simple “yes” when asked to identify himself. Police have identified evidence connecting him to a vehicle that was in the Tepe neighborhood shortly before and after the murders. The car was later found in Rockford, with ties back to McKee, who held a job at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center but had an apartment downtown in Chicago.
Jeffrey Halstead, a former Fort Worth Police Chief, mentioned to Fox News Digital that numerous factors could have motivated McKee to commit the murders nearly nine years post-divorce. He suggested that investigators would be keen to explore recent online activities or conversations that could reveal shifts in McKee’s emotional state—potentially hinting at feelings of frustration or jealousy. Halstead has previously collaborated with Columbus police.
Halstead acknowledged that while some similar cases revolve around financial issues or jealousy, McKee’s actions appear to involve deeper motivations.
“I’ve handled several cases that were tied to financial difficulties, but this one seems different,” he noted. “There had to be a trigger point that led to the alleged crime. It wasn’t just a random act.” Halstead stressed that whatever transpired recently drove McKee to take decisive action.
Spencer’s brother-in-law, Rob Misley, shared that the couple was slated to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary in just a month. It’s unsettling to think about how suddenly everything changed for them.
